How the Camping Landscape is Changing

One of the biggest generational differences OHI found is that Millennials and Gen Z are camping less frequently than their older counterparts. When asked how many times they’ve been camping, RVing or “glamping” in the past 12 months, Boomer/Silent Generation respondents averaged five times, while Millennial and Gen Z respondents averaged four.

While this may not seem like a huge difference at first glance, that’s 20% fewer yearly camping trips for this cohort. And for campsite operators, that discrepancy poses long-term challenges, especially for businesses still reeling from losses related to the pandemic.

The good news: OHI’s report paints a clear picture of what campgrounds can do to win more business with younger visitors. 

Young People Want More Amenities

While the data doesn’t define exactly why younger generations are camping and glamping less, the report does outline the factors driving Millennial and Gen Z camping destination decisions. 

Among all generations, things like location and proximity to attractions, campground atmosphere, and quality and types of sites available are top markers of a successful campsite. Where younger folks diverge from their older counterparts is in onsite recreation, activities, and amenities. While only 34% of Boomer and Silent Generation (and 45% of Gen X) respondents cite amenities as an influencing factor, 65% of Millennials and Gen Z prefer to choose campsites with strong amenities. 

Findings like these aren’t much of a surprise. In the past decade or so, trends like Van Life and the Covid-inspired shift to remote work have shown that, for more and more young people, the great outdoors isn’t just a place to vacation – it’s a setting upgrade for their normal lives. Wherever these folks travel, there’s a greater-than-ever chance that they’ll need to be able to cook, shower, and get online once they arrive.

Simply put, young people want more from their outdoors experience – and they’re not going to budge from those preferences. 4. Apply glue to Side Cover Tab A and fasten the short section of side cover onto it.
5. Apply glue to all of the tabs on the top of the side cover sections and bend them backward.
6. Carefully glue the side cover around the perimeter of the platform (starting with Side Cover Tab B) so that the platform tabs adhere to the backside of the side cover. 

7. Apply glue to Side Cover Tab B and adhere to the other end of the side cover onto it.

When crafting a title for your rental, avoid redundant location information, and try your best to include descriptive words that show the value of your rental in a succinct manner. Instead of “Outdoor Yurt in Southwest Washington” try something like “Modern Style Yurt in the Heart of WA’s Wilderness.” 

The same rules apply for your description. Descriptions should be succinct and to the point when it comes to outlining your Pacific Yurt. If there’s something unique about your rental that distinguishes it over others, include that here, along with other valuable information travelers may want to know. As for formatting, try to keep your descriptions to simple bullet points, and include details only if they add value. 

Pro tip: Change your title and description seasonally to coincide with well-known attractions if you can. Is your yurt close to skiing? Mention it throughout the winter. Is your yurt near a summer superbloom? Include it. You never know what might catch a traveler’s eye.

2. How to price your Pacific Yurt on Airbnb.

This is often one of the more challenging aspects of the Airbnb listing process. In the end, pricing your yurt is all about measuring the competition and naming an amount you feel is worth it. If you can, try to figure out where the “average” price is for your specific rental type and area. Additionally, Airbnb allows you to price your listing differently for weekends, weekdays, holidays, and seasons, so choose your targets accordingly, and consider a cleaning fee, late check-out fee, or other optional add-ons. You can also price your yurt higher if the date is further out, but don’t be afraid to reduce it if days start to go unbooked.

While you don’t necessarily have to invest in a professional photographer, make sure to include neat, spacious, and bright photos. Always stay away from photos that show unflattering angles of your rental, or images that make your space look small or unclean. Instead, focus on the unique elements of your yurt by showcasing its character with clean, engaging, and colorful pictures that entice guests to visit. 

4. Invest in your Airbnb host profile.

Setting up your host profile can feel like an unnecessary annoyance, but the majority of repeat bookings on Airbnb are from hosts that are open, responsive, and friendly throughout the booking process. Put time into your profile by uploading a family-friendly, high-quality photo and include all of the necessary contact information for renters to reach you. 

Establish your communication cadences up-front–even if it’s difficult to be available 24/7. Make it a habit to be as responsive as possible—responsive and friendly hosts are always the first to win bookings from the competition. Also do your best as a guest and a host to write thoughtful, positive reviews in order to establish yourself as a dependable Airbnb host. 

5. List your yurt amenities in full (and be honest).

Nothing separates the best from the rest like a complete list of amenities. Nothing also spoils your guests’ experiences like false advertising. If there’s a six-foot hot tub on your yurt property, don’t refer to it as a pool. If your shower unit offers only cold water, be sure to point that out. Yurts are among the most eco-friendly dwellings in the world today, so highlighting the environmental friendliness of your yurt home, including sustainable gardening or recycling practices, is another essential piece to your listing. Creating a phenomenal guest experience is all about quality and expectations. Being honest about what your yurt offers will ensure your guests are getting exactly what you offer, and nothing less.

Artists of every kind are finding that yurt studios are ideal for their creative work. Yurts provide a cost-effective and convenient work space that can be close to one’s living space, but still separate. This provides the physical and psychological boundaries needed between work—with all its necessary materials and gear—and play or rest in the home.

Beautiful Spaces

Creativity flows in a yurt because the space itself is conducive to it. And, as we’ve noted before, creative work is affected by the space it’s created in. Separate yurts for singers and artists also provide a dedicated space for meetings and creative jam sessions of all kinds.

Beautiful Sound

What recording artists are finding, whether they be singers or musicians, is that the sound quality in a yurt is surprisingly pleasant. A yurt is not a space a recording artist might normally consider good for sound because they are round.

Circular rooms are sometimes found to be terrible for acoustics and recording, and this is certainly true for large round spaces, especially the grand marble or wood ones that frustrated the orators of the past with their odd echoes.

But, because of the fabric and lattice on the walls of a modern yurt, and the fact that the dome ceiling makes things interesting, recording artists are calling yurts some of the best recording spaces they’ve ever used.

Beautiful Shell

Recording studios are usually built with an inner shell—a sort of room within a room—to keep the mass of the inner wall separate from the outer wall. This keeps outside noise, well … outside. The inner room is often built with different wall angles and lengths depending on the sound desired. Sounds waves are reflected strongly off of hard surfaces. The more mass the surface has, the more it reflects. Yurt walls seem to reflect just the right amount of sound, as long as the yurt is not near a busy road where the sounds outside the yurt would be a problem.

Some musicians are enjoying experimenting with the sound in a modern yurt, moving the microphone to different places to hear and appreciate the differences. Music lovers in general have fallen head over heels for yurt stays during festival season. Companies have sprung up all over to serve the music festival industry. Builders will come onto the festival grounds to construct yurts, and rental companies will usually offer luxury options, such as furnishings and a stocked mini-fridge. They offer modern yurt rentals for festival goers to relax in after long days of dancing and singing in the summer sun of festival season.

Even Coachella, the crown jewel in the festival season crown, is now offering modern yurt rentals. On-site luxury yurts are available for concert-goers to stay in at the Resort at Coachella. Two guests can stay for up to 5 nights with a lot of perks (for a steep price), including all meals, a personal driver, and maid service. And of course, other festivals, especially those in the UK, such as the Cornbury Music Festival, have long-offered yurts for rental during their events.

Yurts and Wineries Blend Well Together

Yurts and wineries share a peaceful, open characteristic. They are both of the land and the light. Yurt design naturally blends the inside with the outside, with site lines extending up and outward to the countryside.

Modern yurt design makes it easy to feel the connection between it all. Whether you are enjoying a tasting in a yurt or staying over in wine country, spending time in a yurt enhances the experience immensely.

A Yurt Stay in Wine Country

We highly recommend the experience of a wine-country yurt. However, we do recommend you connect with the vineyard early in the season, as those offering yurt lodgings are often booked far in advance. We also suggest you clarify with the establishment what is provided or included in the lodging. Some yurt stays are all-inclusive, with luxury bedding and stocked mini-fridges. But others may require you bring your own lanterns or bedding.

Some vineyards have fine dining on site during the summer, but most of the smaller boutique wineries do not. If food is not available on site, take care to map out the area ahead of time, so you don’t have to go without cheese.

• Bradley Vineyards: This historic winery near Elkton, OR, offers yurt glamping on the most picturesque site, and a very unique amenity: A vintage record player and vinyl collection. All of this and wine, too!
• Anindor Vineyards: Also in the Umpqua River Valley, Anindor Vineyards features an elegant yurt tasting room. We love their description of their wine as having a ‘glad-to-be-outdoors’ flavor.

California

• Foulplay Farm: The yurt-loving family that owns this charming farm raises heritage chickens and ages their own wine.

Washington

• Whitestone Vineyard & Winery: This family-run business in Creston, WA, uses grapes exclusively from Lake Roosevelt Shores Vineyard, which results in a greater tasting wine with amazing flavor.
